What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is the ancient and timeless, science or knowledge of life, a holistic system of medicine which originated in India thousands of years ago. The first written texts originate around 5,000 years ago, in the form of Sanskrit verse or sloka in what are now known as the classical texts of Ayurveda.

The wisdom of Ayurveda is a vehicle towards achieving an optimum state of health and well being and is thus one of the most enduring and powerful systems of healing, available to everyone.

The tridosha theory is unique to Ayurveda.  Vata, pitta and kapha constitute the chemical nature of every living organism: they are created by the five elements of ether, air, fire, water and earth. We are each a combination of the three constitutions, with one or two being predominant.

It is the specific make up of our constitution or Prakriti, taken together with many other factors such as genetic background, geography, diet, lifestyle, relationships and work, which determines our unique nature. Our specific constitutional make-up is as unique to us as our DNA code. When the three dosha are in their natural proportions, there is balance. To heal is to restore something to its natural state of balance. It is the imbalance in our constitution or Prakriti which causes disorder in the body and mind.

Lifestyle & Nutrition Consultations

At your initial consultation, Sarah will determine any imbalances and thus the root cause of any disorders. Ayurveda emphasises balance in all areas of life and so be prepared to talk a little about your yourself (e.g. your diet, professional life, relationships, mental health and exercise routines). In this way, we can identify the potential causes of imbalance in the mind or body and provide a bespoke treatment plan that includes:

  • Dietary advice (e.g. foods to avoid/include in your diet)

  • Lifestyle advice (e.g. activities to avoid/participate in)

  • Herbal drinks and remedies you can prepare at home

Sarah can also prescribe Ayurvedic herbal medicines and treatments if appropriate, to further promote your healing process and bring the whole system back into balance. These are optional and may include powders or tablets, tonics or jams, therapeutic oils or creams, or Ayurvedic treatments (offered by Sarah or other Ayurvedic Therapists).

All Ayurvedic herbal medicines are ethically sourced in Sri Lanka and of the highest quality (please be aware of cheap products sold on the internet without the guidance of a qualified Ayurvedic Doctor/Practitioner). Medicines are posted out (subject to P&P). Prescriptions normally last 3-4 weeks but creams and oils may last longer.

A follow-up consultation is recommended after 3-4 weeks to check on your progress, make changes to your treatment plan as required and provide any new prescriptions.

Medicines are ONLY available to purchase following a consultation with Sarah. Therapeutic oils can be purchased following a massage treatment. Ayurvedic teas and Dermaved cream (used to treat skin conditions) are available to purchase without prior consultation - get in touch to place an order.

If you are unsure if Ayurveda is able to offer a suitable treatment for your condition, please get in touch and Sarah will advise you, prior to booking your consultation.
